What Are Peptides? - August 31st, 2009

If you’ve looked around a lot for good skin care products, you may have noticed the ingredient called “peptide.”  What are peptides?  I wasn’t sure either, so I looked up some basic info so I knew what I was putting into my skin.

Peptide is made by joining two or more amino acids.  Molecules with 50 amino acids or less are referred to as peptides.  Anything over that amount are known as protein.  How does this tie into skin care?  Collagen is protein, made of long chains of amino acids.  The skin is made mostly of collagen, giving it the firmness we like.  As we age, collage production dramatically decreases.  When we apply peptides to our skin, it helps collagen production.

The problem with products on the market these days is that they try to convince consumers that anything that’s more expensive is “better.”  Unfortunately, that is not the case.  That inflated price tag you see just means they’re getting more profit from you.  When you want to pick out a good product that’s worth your money, take a look at the ingredients.  Do your research!  You won’t be fooled if you look hard enough.
